An investigation has been launched after an arson attack at a pub on Leeds Road.

The blaze broke out in the early hours of Saturday morning at The Wise Owl pub, Deighton, when a window was smashed and accelerant used to set fire to the inside.

Fortunately the two occupants in the accommodation above were alerted to the fire by the landlady’s dogs and managed to escape uninjured.

Det Con Ian Carruthers from Kirklees CID said: “Two people were asleep upstairs when the fire was started and were it not for them being alerted to the fire by the landlady’s dogs barking, then this fire could have had much more dire consequences. As it is the blaze has caused extensive damage to the tap room of the pub.

“We are treating this incident extremely seriously and detectives and neighbourhood officers are working closely together in making enquiries and providing community reassurance.”

The pub remains closed due to the fire damage.

Anyone with information should call Kirklees CID on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
