A fire at a Brighouse takeaway is being investigated as a possible arson.

Police and fire investigators are probing the attack in the early hours of yesterday.

The blaze partially destroyed The Chicken Coop takeaway in Briggate, Brighouse.

Fire crews from Brighouse and Elland were called out to tackle the blaze at 1.53am on Thursday.

Throughout much of yesterday, an area behind the premises remained taped off by police.

Scenes of crimes officers were joined by fire investigators from the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Brighouse watch commander Nigel Dodd said the preparation area of the single-storey building was destroyed and it would be some time before the takeaway could open again.

A neighbouring curry house and Hartleys confectionery store were also affected by smoke.

Fire crews were also called out to deal with a serious blaze in Holmfirth.

The blaze hit the Turner Bros’ garage in Woodhead Road.

It was affected by a fire which destroyed a JCB and a tractor.

Huddersfield watch commander Andy Blackburn said an electrical fault in one of the vehicles had sparked the blaze which was dealt with by crews from Huddersfield, Holmfirth and Meltham.

They remained at the scene for several hours.

Damage was estimated at many thousands of pounds.
