Arsonists have struck again at a row of partially-derelict terraced houses near the now-demolished former Deighton Centre.

In April there were a spate of arson attacks at the demolition site and firebugs today targeted the terraces again, setting one ablaze.

The middle terrace of the block of three went up at 3pm and fire crews from Huddersfield and Rastrick were called out. It started in a room and spread to the roof.

One of the end terraces is still lived in.

No one was hurt but Huddersfield Fire Station watch commander Chris Bell said such fires put others at risk.

He said the fires diverted crews away and “stripped the area of resources.”

Firefighters spent three hours at the scene and police have been informed.

Extra police patrols were being made.

The Deighton Centre was the former Deighton High School which later became a training base for Kirklees Council. The centre itself was demolished in May.
