ARSONISTS attacked an empty house in Dalton.

They had got into a store underneath the semi-detached home on Wakefield Road and set cardboard alight.

The fire took hold and spread upwards, burning through the lounge floor and filling the house with smoke which was spotted by neighbours at 10pm on Friday.

Watch manager Andy Blackburn from Huddersfield fire station said: “It was lucky the smoke was spotted when it was – a few minutes later and the fire would have taken hold in the lounge and then possibly spread through the rest of the house. We had to cut floorboards and skirting boards away to make sure the fire was fully out.

“Flames were shooting out of the store when we arrived.’’

Police are investigating.
