ART lovers from across the world have been snapping up paintings by late Brighouse artist Peter Brook.

Mr Brook’s stock has been soaring since his death in 2009 aged 83 with his work being displayed at top galleries, including The Tate and the Portland in London.

Originally championed by famed Huddersfield actor Sir James Mason, Brook’s distinctive work is now attracting serious interest – and prices – across the country.

An exhibition of his work is currently under way at AC Gallery on Byram Street and owner Mike Baggs said four paintings had sold during the opening two days.

He said: “Peter is so well known locally that we always do well, but we have seen a lot of new customers coming to see us, with many travelling from far and wide.

“I think people have realised Peter’s work is a good investment as well as being fantastic art.

“One lady summed it up when she said she gets far more enjoyment looking at one of Peter’s paintings hanging on her wall than she ever would looking at her bank statement – and it is sure to bring a better return too!

“The demand for Peter’s work continues to increase. I’ve had enquiries in from America, Canada and Australia and one of the paintings was purchased by a serious art collector who has homes in London, LA and Bahrain.”
