WORK has started on new sculptures designed to give Brackenhall a new look.

Artists Dan Jones and Lewis Morgan have begun carving stone sculptures at Brackenhall Community Centre.

They are creating a series of six hand-carved sculptures, to be placed at the roadside on grass verges next to speed bumps around the area.

They are also creating a stone feature wall, to replace a brickwork barrier which divides Hopkinson Road.

Brackenhall residents dropped in to watch the artists at work - and even tried their hand at sculpture.

The projects are two of four devised for the estate under a scheme run by Batley-based arts and regeneration agency Loca and the Deighton and Brackenhall Initiative.

Last summer, the two organisations commissioned a survey of residents to see how people thought the area could be improved with art.

The results were used to create sculpture projects, which people voted on last June.
