A HUDDERSFIELD street was sealed off for several hours after broken sheets of deadly asbestos were found.
The asbestos, which can cause lung cancer, was discovered on St John's Road close to its junction with Beck Road and Huddersfield ring road at 1.40pm yesterday.
Sgt Tim O'Sullivan, of Huddersfield police, said: "A man phoned us to say the substance looked like asbestos.
"Bits were flaking and breaking off from it.
"We don't know how it got there at this stage."
Firefighters were called and dampened the asbestos to stop it breaking up anyfurther.
Environmental health officials took samples and the sheeting was moved by Kirklees Council staff.
The incident lasted until about 7pm and caused traffic problems in the area.
