DO-IT-YOURSELF fans planning on replacing the garage roof are being urged to dispose of the remains safely.

A free skip for asbestos cement - the sheet building material commonly used for roofing - is being provided at the household waste and recycling centre at Emerald Street in Huddersfield.

Kirklees Council scientific services manager Stewart Horn warned householders to take care when handling asbestos cement.

He said: "Asbestos can kill and should be handled with extreme care.

"Asbestos cement, which is usually grey in colour and corrugated, can be handled by householders. But other types of asbestos, such as insulation board which can be similar in appearance, but softer, should not be handled."

Anyone needing to use the skip should ring 01484 536967 at least 12 hours in advance to book a time.

A collection service is available at a charge for those who do not have a suitable vehicle. Ring 01484 226478.
