STAFF at a supermarket in Huddersfield are among thousands of employees to benefit from a share ownership scheme.
Workers at Leeds-based supermarket giant Asda have saved more than £500m since a share ownership programme was launched 30 years ago.
Under the savings scheme, workers set aside between £5 and £250 a month for a three-year period, at the end of which they receive a tax-free bonus and a chance to buy discounted shares in parent firm Walmart.
About 25,000 employees have joined the scheme every year, saving an average of £20 a month.
They include many of the staff at the firm’s store at Bradford Road, Brackenhall, which employs more than 500 people.
Included in the £515m awarded to staff over 30 years, is the record £49m they pocketed last year.
Those who took part and saved the maximum amount received more than £15,000, representing a profit of more than £6,000 on their original investment of £9,000.
Over the past 30 years, staff have spent their windfall on everything from dream holidays and cars, to home improvements, weddings and medical procedures.
