A rare chance to tread the boards of the Lawrence Batley Theatre has been opened up to aspiring actors from across the region, as part of the first Tour de France cultural festival.
The theatre is looking for people over the age of 15 to star in supporting roles in its in-house production of Lost Boy Racer, written by Huddersfield playwright Julie Bokowiec.
It was commissioned as part of the Yorkshire Festival, which will celebrate the arrival of the Tour de France from March 27 to July 6, and was one of 50 events selected from 200 applications.
It is not often that the theatre stages its own plays and roles are usually given to members of the theatre’s Young Company.
The gritty comedy follows the tale of an overweight tax inspector facing a personal crisis, Sean Racer, who decides to use two wheels to get his life back on track.
Successful actors will work with Julie Bokowiec to create their own characters and costume ideas and alongside the professional actors carrying the main roles and the great nephew of the Lord of the Rings J.R.R. Tolkien and sculptor Tim Tolkien.
The theatre’s marketing manager, Laura Rodwell, said that theatre staff hoped the opportunity would unearth hidden local talent.
She said: “It’s a great opportunity for people who are interested in pursuing a career in theatre.
“This is the first time we have been able to open up the casting call to all adults since I began working here several years ago so would encourage everyone to come along and give it a go because it will be a great learning experience.
“We are looking for approximately 10 – 15 committed people, interested in visual and physical comedy theatre, who must be able to attend all of the workshop sessions, the on stage rehearsal with the professional company and all performances. “
Talking about the play, Julie said: “We are absolutely delighted that Lost Boy Racer will be part of the Yorkshire Festival 2014 and we are working exceptionally hard to create a theatre experience that is unique, full of fun and Yorkshire true grit.’
The recruitment workshop is on May 17 from 1pm to 4pm and rehearsal workshops will take place on May 31, June 7, June 14, June 21 and 24.
The play will take to the stage on June 25 to 27.
