NO further action is to be taken against a Huddersfield councillor arrested over an alleged assault.

Mohammad Sarwar, 44, a Liberal Democrat on Kirklees Council, was arrested by police investigating an incident in Victoria Road, Lockwood, on July 4 in which a 39-year-old woman was injured.

He was bailed until September 1, pending further inquiries.

But when he answered his bail on Wednesday he was told he was being released from it and no further action would be taken.

Clr Sarwar, of North Street, Lockwood, has been a councillor since May, 1999.

He was elected to the Crosland Moor ward with a majority of 138 votes over the former Labour councillor, Graham Sykes.

Clr Sarwar owns the AZ International Food Store in Victoria Road.
