A care home has been rated “inadequate” after staff saw faeces smeared on carpets and handrails.

Residents at Aston Manor care home in Dewsbury “were not treated with dignity and respect”, according to a report published by care watchdogs the CQC.

The report details that inspectors found “one landing area had extensive smears of faeces on the carpet, the walls, the furniture and the handrails”, with “highly offensive odours” upsetting one of the residents.

It adds that “later we saw there was still faeces on the handrail and the offensive odour remained throughout the day”.

The unannounced inspection was carried out in early November last year.

Other concerns include a member of staff referring to someone by the wrong name more than once, a resident’s trousers falling down which went unnoticed by the staff member attending to him, and that the home’s faith room was being used as a store room.

Aston Manor is run by Mauricare Limited and specialises with people suffering from dementia.

The website claims the home “respect’s people’s equality, diversity, human rights, dignity and personhood”.

The report also claims that while staff could be reassuring to residents, others were ignored.

It said: “We saw in the lounge one person needed the toilet. We saw staff did not identify the person’s needs for help and the inspector intervened, but by this time the person was incontinent and this situation compromised their dignity.”

A spokesperson for Mauricare Ltd said: “The report published is a period of history to November 2015 which is only a year under our ownership. We see it pretty much a work in progress as we continue with our plan to rebuild and making the home a better place to live. We remain grateful to all our partners for support and understanding todate. As a provider we see safety and wellbeing of our residents as paramount.”
