An asylum seeker who was jailed for passport crimes will be deported after serving his time behind bars.
Garcia Cui, 33, who was living in Aspley presented the false Portuguese passport as proof of identity and permission to work when registering with a West Yorkshire recruitment agency in May. He did not have permission to work in the UK at the time.
When the agency carried out pre-employment checks with Home Office officials, the document was examined and identified as counterfeit. Cui, who fled from Angola to the UK, was arrested last month.
He pleaded guilty to possessing the false passport and was jailed at Leeds Crown Court for eight months. The Home Office will seek to deport him from the UK at the end of his sentence.
Richard King, from Home Office Immigration Enforcement Criminal Investigations, said: “This case demonstrates our determination to crack down on identity fraudsters who attempt to abuse the UK’s immigration laws.
“We work closely with employers to identify fake documents and prevent people gaining employment by deception.
“The Home Office is cracking down on all forms of immigration crime, no matter how large or small, and those who try to cheat the system face prosecution and conviction.”
Arrests are carried out by trained immigration officers who carry out operations at businesses and private addresses, acting on intelligence received from the public and other sources. All intelligence is protected.
