A MAN is still in hospital after he was viciously attacked by a gang after trying to help in an argument.

The 45-year-old - who has not been named - is in Huddersfield Royal Infirmary with a badly broken arm, a broken nose and severe bruising.

He has had an operation to try to repair his arm.

His girlfriend said: "It was a very bad fracture and he has had major surgery to put it right, including a steel rod from his shoulder to the elbow.

"We are not certain if his arm will ever be the same again."

The victim was attacked in Heaton Moor Road, Kirk- heaton, shortly before 9pm last Friday - not Saturday as previously reported.

Earlier in the evening he had asked youths to stop throwing snowballs at a house in nearby Newbury Walk.

Then, as he set off to pick up a takeaway meal, he saw a teenage boy and girl arguing.

He tried to intervene, but was set upon by a gang of youths.
