Enterprising young people in Kirklees have come through a testing time with flying colours.

And they teamed up for an awards night celebrating their achievements in the Alternative Market and Test Town challenge.

Kirklees deputy mayor, Clr Jim Dodds, and the creator of the national Teenage Market, Joe Barratt, presented awards for the best business growth, unique products, and best overall displays among others.

And the overall Test Town winner Adriana Tavares-Green will now represent Huddersfield in the national finals in Glasgow. She faces a week of intensive training where she will compete against other regional winners and the chance to win £10,000 investment in her business.

Schools and colleges which have offered the biggest contribution to enterprise among young people were also rewarded.

Earlier this year, Huddersfield entered the national Test Town competition and – with the Welcome to Huddersfield initiative – won a place with nine other towns in the national finals.

Many young traders took part and were judged on quality of product, pricing, overall presentation, customer service and viability of their business.

Clr Dodds told the young entrepreneurs: “Often young people are overlooked when it comes to business, but this shouldn’t be the case. This event is about celebrating the achievements of all the people who have taken part. There have already been 26 markets in the first year, and the feedback we get about the markets, the training sessions and the performances has been excellent.”
