THREE Kirklees sporting achievers have netted cash awards to help them gain further success.

The Npower SportsAid award comes from the Federation of Disability Sports Organisations.

Jacob Stewart, 11, from Huddersfield, suffers from dyspraxia, a condition affecting co-ordination.

But he is the under-16 British champion of martial arts and gained the under-16 silver medal at the European Championships in Poland this year.

Jacob has been awarded £250 to help him with the cost of training.

His dad, Robert, said: "This is excellent news. Jacob is one of the youngest members working towards training with the British team. Without this grant he would not be able to take part."

Howard Tomlinson, 28 from Mirfield, received £250 to help him attend table tennis training weekends throughout the country.

He hopes this will help him be selected to play for the England team.

And Huddersfield-born Vicky Tullett, aged 12, specialises in equestrian dressage and will ride in the disabled national qualifying event this season.

Her £200 award will provide support for training towards her goal of becoming an equestrian Olympic gold medalist.

The award is part of a £2,900 handout by energy provider Npower, the FDSO and SportsAid, to promote sporting opportunities for people with disabilities in Yorkshire and Lincolnshire.

An Npower spokesman said "Jacob, Howard and Vicky are all deserving candidates."
