AXE killer Janet Charlton has walked free from prison.

She was switched from Buckley Hall prison in Rochdale to Askham Grange open prison, near York, in the run-up to her release.

She walked out of the prison at 6.55am today and was met by her parents, Herbert and Beryl Kenny, who drove her straight to their home in Middleton, Greater Manchester.

The 38-year-old divorcee was convicted of manslaughter after hacking her 41-year- old lover, Daniel O'Brien, to death with an axe at the home they shared at Midgley, near Flockton, in May 2001. The killing happened during a steamy sex session.

She was jailed for five years, but this was reduced to three-and-a-half years at the Appeal Court in London.

The Appeal judges accepted defence submissions that Charlton, formerly of Marina Terrace in Golcar, had been the victim of sexual abuse and that O'Brien had threatened her young daughter.
