A MAN who cheated death in a blazing house today thanked his rescuers.

Singing teacher Steven Mellor said simply: I owe my life to the firefighters.

The rescuers found Mr Mellor, 49, collapsed in the bedroom of his blazing home in Birkby and carried him to safety.

He had been overcome by deadly smoke and fumes as fire ripped through his home.

But the firefighters gave him vital first aid, which kept him alive before paramedics arrived.

Mr Mellor was rushed to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and spent days in its intensive care unit.

He is now making a full recovery.

Mr Mellor, who is living in a rented flat in Huddersfield, has one aim: To thank personally all those who saved him.

He said: "I am very keen to thank the firefighters for saving my life.

"I asked the fire investigator how long I would have survived if they had not got to me when they did - and he said it was a matter of seconds."
