A MAN was badly hurt when he was attacked on a main Huddersfield road.

Police believe the victim was thumped in what could be a road rage incident on Wakefield Road, Aspley, at 3.10am today.

The 34-year-old Almondbury man suffered serious head injuries. He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, where his condition was still being assessed today.

A witness told police he heard shouting and looked out of his window.

He saw the victim with his hands on the bonnet of a white Vauxhall Astra.

Two men got out of the car and one punched the victim. He fell to the ground and is thought to have cracked his head on the road.

The men got back in the car and drove off.

Det Con Steve Shaw, of Huddersfield CID, said: "We believe people in a blue or black Lexus or Vauxhall Vectra saw what happened. We would urge them to come forward.

"The victim has suffered serious injuries.

"We would also like to hear from anyone who saw what happened before the man was assaulted and anyone else with information," added Det Con Shaw.

Part of Wakefield Road was sealed off for hours after the incident.
