Motorists have hit out at Kirklees Council over a “badly signed” Holmfirth parking bay which has caused fining misery for many.

The bay on Victoria Street outside HSBC means parking is free for an hour during the day, but between 8pm and 2am is a designated taxi rank.

But car owners have claimed signs are confusing, resulting in many receiving an unobjectable fine.

Huddersfield Road resident Stuart Sharp has been parking in the bay for 23 years, but was slapped with a fine last Friday evening after going for a meal at Mezze.

Stuart, a self-employed management consultant, said: “I park there twice a week whenever I go into Holmfirth.

“My issue is that there are no markings on the road in the bay that indicate you can’t park there in the evening.”

Stuart says the £35 fine was issued shortly after 9pm - less than an hour after he had parked there - on Saturday, May 20th.

He added: “I have always parked there during the day so thought nothing of it to park there in the evening. I thought it would be free to stay in the evenings.

“The trouble is it is a different sort of fine to the ones normally issued by the council. The only way you can object to it is by taking it to court if there is a legal reason why you shouldn’t pay the fine.”

Fenay Bridge resident Megan Whiteley was also hit with one of the fines the same evening.

Megan, 24, an occupational therapist, had parked in the bay to attend a friend’s leaving do.

She said: “It’s not well-marked at all and I got a really nasty surprise at the end of the night.

“There is a sign saying when you can park there in the day, then a tiny one above it saying it is also a taxi rank, but it’s easily missed.

“I go into Holmfirth a lot and I’ve always parked there.

“I’ve never seen taxis there but there are always other regular cars parked there, so you could easily be misled into thinking it’s okay to park.”

A council spokesperson said: “The night-time parking restrictions are clearly signed and it is the responsibility of the driver to ensure that they check the restrictions.”
