BALLOONS were launched over Birchencliffe in a bid to teach people about bowel disease.

The balloons, bearing the slogan Bowel Cancer Awareness Month, were launched as part of an information day organised by the Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, at the Briar Court Hotel on Halifax Road.

Colorectal nurse specialists Kerry Matthews (left) and Michelle Speight are pictured with some of the balloons.

Representatives of medical groups, charities and other health organisations were also there to offer information about a range of bowel problems.

Caroline Lamb, a colorectal nurse at the Infirmary, said: "It is Bowel Cancer Awareness Month but we were also trying to raise awareness of other bowel conditions.

"It is something which if often not talked about."
