TRAVELLERS could be facing industrial action by staff on the East Coast Main Line, which links Yorkshire with London and Scotland.

Transport union TSSA plans to ballot more than 150 members in travel centres of rail company GNER.

The ballot follows plans to cut staff numbers in GNER's centres.

GNER's parent company Sea Containers has filed for bankruptcy protection.

Sea Containers has said despite its financial situation there is no danger to rail services run by GNER.

There have been concerns GNER would not be able to meet its obligation to pay back £1.3bn to the Government over the 10-year life of its East Coast franchise.

Thousands of Huddersfield travellers use the line, with trains to London from Leeds and Wakefield and to Scotland from York.

TSSA general secretary Gerry Doherty said: "The last thing our members want to do is to go out on strike.

"However, if they don't stand-up to the company, passengers will pay the price.

"The company seems intent on rail-roading through cost-cutting measures regardless of genuine concerns raised by staff and passengers alike.

"The company wants to get rid of staff and replace them with machines and internet sales to enable Sea Containers to meet the ridiculous financial arrangements agreed in the franchise."
