Bangers kept running through four countries and four Grand Prix circuits to raise cash for Forget Me Not Children's Hospice.

The Bangers and Class rally, featuring five local teams, raised £13,000 for the Brackenhall-based charity.

Teams were challenged to buy an old motor for a pittance and take it on a 1,400-mile trip around Europe, including stops at racing circuits including Brands Hatch, in Kent, and the Nurburgring, in Germany.

Among those taking part were driving instructors Pete Tiernan and Nigel Deans, who run the off-road school Huddersfield Driving Experience.

Pete and Nigel completed the tour, which started in Huddersfield, in a 12-year-old BMW 318 bought for £450.

Meanwhile other teams in jalopies, including Wrights Marketing, of Upperthong, made up the field through France, Belgium, The Netherlands and Germany.

And the bangers stayed strong – even on the twists and turns of GP circuits Silverstone, Northamptonshire, and Spa Francorchamps, Belgium and the high-speed unrestricted sections of the Autobahn.

Fartown-based Pete, who also runs Pass With Pete driving school, said: “The only drama was when me and 25st, 6ft 4in Nigel were offered a double room. Nigel wasn’t bothered but I said: ‘No chance!’

“We really enjoyed ourselves and we hope to go back next year with more vehicles.”

He added: “It was really good fun with no major problems or breakdowns – and we raised £13,000 for Forget Me Not Children’s Hospice which is what is was really about.

“There’s talk of doing the next one with flat caps and capes in Jags.”

Forget Me Not Hospice head of corporate fundraising, Emma Kovaleski, said: “From everyone at the hospice we would like to thank the teams for their terrific support and for raising a fantastic amount for our charity.

“All of the teams had an amazing time and can’t wait to take part next year when it will be even bigger and better.”
