A man who denied flouting his driving ban was caught out after challenging police to check CCTV footage - which showed him behind the wheel.

Waseem Adalat pleaded guilty to charges of driving whilst disqualified, using a vehicle without insurance and failing to provide a breath specimen.

The 27-year-old was already serving time in prison after breaching a suspended sentence made for other driving offences.

Andy Wills, prosecuting, said that on February 23 police were called to the scene of a crash on Grimescar Avenue in Birkby.

The driver of the Volkswagen Golf involved had failed to stop and give his details.

This information was circulated to police in the area.

They noticed the car, which had damage to its front end, heading towards Blacker Road.

It pulled up in a newsagent’s forecourt and two men got out.

Mr Wills said: “The defendant said that the vehicle belonged to his sister and they were waiting for Green Flag to recover it.

“His words were slurred and he was arrested.

“He said: ‘Check the cameras, I wasn’t driving’.

“Unfortunately, the newsagents had cameras which showed the vehicle driving towards the newsagents and Mr Adalat alighting from the driver’s side.”

Adalat, of Clapton Avenue, Halifax, failed to provide breath or blood samples at the police station.

Checks on the Police National Computer showed that he was a banned driver until August 2016.

In interview Adalat denied being drunk, claiming that he had drunk only one bottle of WKD.

Magistrates heard that Adalat had 41 previous convictions.

In March a judge at Bradford Crown Court sentenced him to 10 months in custody. This was after he breached a suspended sentence made for offences of dangerous driving, driving whilst disqualified and possession of a class A drug.

Eric Topham, mitigating, said that at the time of the offences his client was going through a difficult period in his life.

He told magistrates: “He was addicted to drugs and spending an obscene amount of money every day to try and feed his addiction.”

Mr Topham added that during his time in prison Adalat is now trying to get help.

Magistrates sentenced him to a total of 12 weeks in prison for the new offences.

They also banned him from driving for an extra three years.
