A man arrested after supplying crack cocaine to undercover police officers has been jailed for 28 months.

Leeds Crown Court heard today that Adam Baig began delivering the drugs for a dealer in a bid to pay off his own debt.

Between November 1 last year and January 31 this year he turned up on seven occasions when the undercover officers – part of Operation Overwood targeting dealers in Kirklees – placed an order to a “ring and bring” line.

John Bull, prosecuting, told the court Baig was given the tag name Bath until later identified from stills taken during the investigation because on the first four occasions he turned up with the wraps the officers had been directed to wait near the Bath Hotel in Dewsbury.

Shufqat Khan, representing Baig, said until summer last year he had been leading a normal life, working although he admitted dabbling in cannabis.

But after his parents had difficulties and separated he was unable to cope and resorted to using drugs to escape from his problems, quickly using up his savings.

He then found himself in debt for his drugs and was told he could pay it off by making deliveries.

Mr Khan said: “He was provided with the drugs and told where to go and who to deliver them to.”

He said Baig “realised the error of his ways” and stopped what he was doing. With the help of family he also stopped taking drugs himself, paid off the debt and with the support of an uncle he had started his own market stall. Mr Khan suggested Baig had put his life right and need not receive an immediate jail term.

Baig, 25 of Brown’s Place, Batley, admitted seven charges of supplying class A drugs.

Jailing him Judge Guy Kearl QC said he had read references showing Baig as a kind and responsible family member and had taken into account his personal circumstances but there had to be an immediate sentence.
