FIRE CREWS spent much of the weekend battling a huge warehouse blaze in Cleckheaton.

At one point on Saturday night, more than 60 firefighters - hampered by fierce storms - were at the Hillside Works on the Whitehall Industrial Estate, Hunsworth Lane, Hunsworth.

The alarm was raised just after 3pm on Saturday.

Plastics, paper, vehicles and cylinders had all been stored in the 20-metre by 50 metre warehouse.

It took 12 hours to put out the initial blaze as firefighters worked well into the night in stormy winds, sleet and rain.

Police on patrol at about 7.20am yesterday noticed smoke pouring from the building again.

Fifty firefighters turned out, including crews from Brighouse, Elland, Dewsbury, Hunsworth, Cleckheaton and Odsal.

Senior Divisional Officer John Jones said an investigation would be carried out.

He said the entire operation had been tough, adding: "We got there late on Saturday afternoon and the fire was being fanned by very strong winds and adverse weather."

Police closed a section of Whitehall Road running past the fire due to poor visibility because of smoke.

Traffic on the nearby M62 was unaffected.
