RUNNERS in a Denby Dale Athletics Club beat the Badger for charity.

The Badger, a narrow-gauge steam locomotive at Kirklees Light Railway, chugged the three-and-a-half mile journey from Shelley to Clayton West, while the athletes took to public footpaths which run close by.

Stuart Ross, general manager of the Kirklees Light Railway, said: “The race works really well; our trains take around 22 minutes to travel from Shelley to Clayton West and some of the athletes have, in the past, completed the route in just over 20 minutes.

“We have had some quite nail-biting finishes over the last five years!”

The event was held in aid of Cancer Research.
