Dancing ‘til dawn could be about to sound very tame when a club night for those who have not stopped hitting the dance floor since the 1970s opens its doors.

The streets of Huddersfield will be packed full of the moves of veteran clubbers on November 16, when Club 55 bursts back onto the scene to keep everyone grooving 40 years on.

Open to anyone over the age of 55, scores of ravers will put their best feet forward at the heart of the town’s student quarter in Rhubarb, to prove that life only gets better the older you get.

They will be dancing the night away to classics from the 1960s to 1990s and live band, The Beat Brothers. The event has been organised by the local activities group, the Culture Club, who hope the night will be the first of a new regular event.

And one man who hopes to be one of the first through the doors is retired 69-year-old, John Cocker, of Heckmondwike, who is making his dancefloor comeback after dancing the night away at the event last year.

He said: “Last year it was a really lively night and it was great to get into town and meet people.

“It was revitalising and the music brought back memories so I’m looking forward to going again.”

Culture Club co-ordinator Rachel Massey, decided to push ahead with the night to give those in their sixth decade of life and beyond ‘somewhere

special’ to have a big night out.

She said: “Everyone really enjoyed the first club night last year but we have been searching for the perfect venue with the extras that the clubbers asked for, such as real ale and plenty of comfy seating for socialising between dancing.

“Club 55-goers will be greeted at the door and the whole event is intended to offer an atmosphere that’s friendly and fun.”

It is just one of the cultural events put on by the organisation, which encourages those from across Kirklees to paint the tiles red and enjoy their retirement years and is funded by Kirklees Council and The National Lottery through Arts Council England.

Doors open at 8pm with entertainment until midnight and tickets are available on the door for £11 for members and non-members, or £9 in advance for Culture Club members. To pre-book, call 01484 663518.
