Bowling enthusiasts have been given permission to carry on playing – for now – at a defunct social club while offers for the premises are considered.

Members of Newsome Working Men’s Club decided last month to place the club into voluntary liquidation after running into cash flow problems.

Now liquidators at insolvency firm Begbies Traynor – who are seeking a buyer for the club – have granted a licence enabling the community to use the county-standard bowling green until all offers have been considered.

Joint liquidator Peter Sargent said: “Some of the members are keen to start a new bowling club and we have agreed to let them use the green as an interim measure until the long-term future of the club house and bowling green has been decided.

“This means that the community still has somewhere to meet and socialise and the bowling teams can continue and, hopefully prosper. It also has the advantage of the site being occupied, reducing the chances of vandalism and keeping the green to the highest standards.

“Depending on the offers we receive for the site, the strategy is either to sell the whole of the site and grant the bowlers a secure lease or to sell the club building and – as this is a members voluntary liquidation – transfer use of the green to the bowling club members.

“While it is sad that the club is no longer viable, we are working to facilitate the continuity of the bowling club if at all possible.”

The family friendly working men’s club, believed to date back more than a century, had more than 250 members and offered a variety of social and sports amenities including crown green bowling, snooker and pool.

Enquiries for the club premises are being handled by the Halifax office of commercial property agent Walker Singleton.
