THOUSANDS of drivers have been caught by speed cameras across Kirklees.

But police have refused to reveal exactly which camera catches the most speeding drivers.

Attempts by the Examiner to find the speed camera that has snapped the most drivers in Huddersfield have been blocked.

Police said there was a national agreement in place not to disclose specific site details.

However, the Freedom of Information Act request did reveal:

* In 2005 the total numbers of drivers caught speeding in the Kirklees area was 15,273.

* There were 4,778 speeding offences in Huddersfield in the same period.

* On average there were 1,273 speeding offences in Kirklees per month last year.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "We are unable to provide the information in respect of specific cameras as there has been a national agreement not to disclose site specific details of the cameras.

"As this is highly sensitive information, the concern is that this could give information on the levels of activity on specific sites and enable comparisons to be drawn, compromising operational effectiveness."
