CLAIMS of a massive improvement in Kirklees Council's housing benefits service were attacked today.
Labour group leader Clr Mehboob Khan said the time taken to process claims had risen dramatically.
"The most recent set of published figures show that this Liberal Democrat council still takes longer to process a housing benefit claim than it did three years ago.
"Most people would agree this is not good enough," he said.
Clr Khan's comment came after figures showed outstanding work had reduced from 44,000 claims in April, 2002, to 3,300 last month.
He said that at the end of March it was taking 135 days to process claims - against 57 days three years since.
Clr Khan said: "Despite over £2m invested in the revenue and benefits service the public are still getting a worse service than when Labour lost control of Kirklees Council.
"There is not much to celebrate - and it is far too early to claim any success."
He said he wanted the backlog cleared and all claims processed within 30 days.
People were still facing long delays when trying to contact the revenue and benefits service by phone, added Clr Khan.
