A MOTOR HOME owner is claiming the big vehicles are being excluded from Huddersfield.

Derek Green, of Birchencliffe, said his motor home is his only vehicle and there are very few facilities for it in the town centre.

He said he could park in only one town-centre off-road site - Cambridge Road - because of height restriction barriers at other sites.

He said he wanted to see designated parking spaces created for motor homes, similar to those in use for lorries and motorbikes.

Kirklees Council has rejected the idea.

Mr Green said : "I find the attitude very negative in town. I don't feel welcome in my own town."

A Kirklees Council spokeswoman said barriers were to prevent heavy vehicles damaging the surfacing.

She added: "There are no designated spaces for motor homes because town centre spaces are at a premium and allocation of such a facility would often result in under-utilised parking stock."

She said motorcycle spaces were provided only because the gap would be too small for a car to use.

However, Mr Green said the council needed to ask motor home owners before they decided the spaces would not be used.

He said: "The whole attitude to motor homes seems to be discriminatory. They say you can't do that, or we can't do that for you."

Mr Green also had problems getting into household waste disposal sites in Huddersfield, where barriers stop commercial vehicles dumping non-household waste.

The spokeswoman apologised for Mr Green's inconvenience and said barriers would be removed on request to let him through.
