POLICE are appealing for witnesses after the attempted abduction of a 14-year-old girl.

A man tried to pull the victim into an alleyway in Cowlersley at around 10pm on Good Friday.

The girl was walking along Cowlersley Lane, from the Milnsbridge area, on her own.

The man struck at the junction of Josephine Road, close to the Premier Food and Wine shop.

Det Con Richard Ford, of Kirklees CID, said the man was sitting on a bench.

"He tried to speak to her initially, there was a very brief conversation and then he attempted to drag her down a dark alleyway at the side of the food and wine shop.

"She managed to break free and run off."

The girl alerted police using her mobile phone.

The man is described as mixed-race, between 20 and 30, around 5ft 7in tall and was wearing a light coloured top and dark trousers.
