A PROJECT is being launched to improve the fitness of Newsome residents.

The Newsome Next Generation Healthy Living Project will be launched at Newsome High School and Sport College on October 2 at 10am.

Free healthy snacks, drinks and nutrition advice will be on offer, along with temporary tattoos and activities like tai chi and dance.

There will also be a free prize draw to win a month's membership to Newsome Fitness - the new exercise suite which has opened at Newsome High School.

The newly-built facility was paid for with Newsome Neighbourhood Renewal Fund money as well as funding received by the school because of its specialist sports college status.

Newsome Fitness features gym equipment and classes run by qualified instructors.

The facilities are not only open to pupils but to the wider community.

Headteacher Gerry Hull said: "Many people think gyms are only for the super fit, but people of any level of fitness can benefit from an active lifestyle."
