NEIGHBOURS are opposing plans for a chimney to be added to a waste transfer depot.

People living near the building at Station Road, Mirfield, fear it will be used to burn hazardous waste.

Protester Malcolm Naylor said: "This concerns us a lot."

He raised his objections in a two-man delegation to Kirklees Council.

Planners initially refused to allow a chimney on the grounds it was not needed. But applicants P and P Wilkinson are making a fresh bid.

Mr Naylor said neighbours were concerned about safety.

Waste transfer depot plans were approved last year despite a protest which saw thousands of people sign petitions.

Mr Naylor said: "We were told by a councillor that nothing further would be approved for this site."

Clr Kath Pinnock, the council's Liberal Democrat leader, said no decision had yet been made by planners on the further application.

"Nothing has been determined.

"I urge residents to go to the committee to make representations," she said.
