FUNDRAISERS working for Kirkwood Hospice in Dalton have had a staggering response to their latest appeal.

They sent 40,000 letters to some Huddersfield and Holmfirth residents.

The letter told people of the services provided by the hospice and also asked for their support in raising funds for the local cause.

Fundraising manager Annabel Arkless said: "I am delighted with the results of our mailing.

"Many people have contacted the hospice to let us know how pleased they were to receive the information and donations are being received every day.

"People have been so generous, it really is overwhelming.

"In total, we are hoping to raise £8,000 in cash and a further £12,000 per year in standing orders, so we are nearly there," added Annabel.

The hospice has received more than £5,000 in one-off donations and a further £9,000 per year has been promised by people paying with a monthly or annual standing order.

In 2005, the hospice's expenditure will be over £3m.

The local Primary Care Trusts and central government have promised to fund 20% of these costs.

The hospice will rely on volun- tary sources, such as donations from members of the public, to cover the remaining £2.5m.
