PUPILS gave Princess Anne a rousing welcome when she visited Rastrick Preparatory and Nursery School.

Tiny tots and older pupils braved the cold to wave their union flags, while Brighouse Salvation Army brass band joined members of the school band in playing the National Anthem.

The Princess Royal, wearing a jade green suit and black three-quarter- length boots, was escorted on a tour of the school by headmistress Susan Vaughey.

She was introduced to head boy Jack Firth, 10, of Edgerton, and head girl Stephanie Taylor, 10, of Fixby.

Music was provided by the choirs of Sing Live Northern and Huddersfield- based Oscars College of Performance Arts, which performed a song specially-written for the occasion.

Princess Anne visited the school to receive a £9,355 cheque from the school for Save the Children.

The event also marked the school's 10th anniversary.

A new building, which will take children up to the age of 16, is due to open next year.

The school was developed on the site of the former Rastrick Grammar School which suffered a major fire after it was left derelict.

Mr William Ibberson, of Younger Homes, whose company developed the site for Rastrick Preparatory and Nursery School, was introduced to the Princess Royal.

He said: "She's very approachable, she's lovely."

Sir Donald Thompson, former Conservative MP for the Calder Valley, who gave the princess three jars of Yorkshire Mixtures said afterwards: "She told me she was most impressed with what she had seen.

"She said it was remarkable what had been achieved in 10 years."

The princess unveiled a plaque marking the occasion.

Following the unveiling, she said: "The Save the Children Fund recognises the importance of education where ever in the world - it makes a difference."
