Get ready for The Big Chill over Easter.

That’s the warning from Huddersfield weatherman Paul Stevens as April looks set to arrive on a band of wind, rain, sleet and snow.

But it’s not all bad news: the forecaster has hinted at some sunny spells in between the showers, and predicted a much warmer spell after the Easter holidays.

Some forecasters earlier this month had talked of the hottest Easter on record, with temperatures into the 80s, but that is certainly not going to be the case.

The Jetstream is hitting parts of the UK and bringing wet and windy weather from the west.

And with cold winds coming from the north, there is definitely a wet and cold feel to the next few days.

Mr Stevens said: “All through this week we will be getting a mixture of sunshine and showers, with some strong winds.

“It’s very much a case of April showers but it is also likely to feel very cold.

“There are some strong winds around from the north and with those and the rain , it will be very cold at times. There is also a good chance of ground frosts at night and it will be cold enough in the evenings and early mornings to have sleet and snow.

“Don’t be surprised to see a covering of snow on the hills and moors around Huddersfield.

“It is certainly not the Easter heatwave that some had predicted”.

Good Friday is likely to be a real mix of sunshine and showers with the rain falling as sleet on higher ground.

The pattern is repeated over the holiday weekend although when the sun does shine, it will be pleasant.

“Overall we look set for a chilly Easter with strong winds and rain, but also some good sunny spells if people wrap up warm.

“And the good news is that after Easter, it looks as though we are in for a spell of high pressure which should mean some warmer, drier days”, said Mr Stevens.
