DRIVERS faced big delays after one of the main bridges bringing people into Huddersfield was shut.

King's Bridge at the bottom of Newsome Road was sealed off after a group of men were allegedly robbed early this morning.

Three Asian men are said to have confronted them on the landmark bridge at 3.20am.

During the fracas it is understood one of the robbers may have fallen over the bridge into the River Colne.

A police spokesman said: "The bridge was sealed off this morning, potentially to preserve any evidence.

"The investigation is at an early stage," he added.

The bridge has undergone major construction over the last two years so it can withstand heavier lorries allowed on British roads by European Union laws.

Drivers have had to get used to a three-way traffic light system.

This only allowed traffic across the bridge in one direction at any one time.

The work is almost finished and the bridge is due to fully reopen soon.
