Hundreds are expected to take to the streets to protest over planned hospital cuts.

There will be two days of demonstrations across Huddersfield, Kirklees and Calderdale under the banner “Only Clowns Would Close Our A&Es”.

That will be the message from members of the public who are expected to back the NHS with a walk from Calderdale Royal Hospital to Pinderfields Hospital, via Huddersfield Royal Infirmary and Dewsbury District Hospital on August 22 and 23.

There are proposals on the table which could see one of the A&E units at either Huddersfield Royal Infirmary or Calderdale Royal Hospital shut down, and other proposals to downgrade services at Dewsbury.

Organisers say the aim of the walk is to make all three NHS Trust chiefs aware that the public will not accept any downgrading of services, loss of services or back door privatisation of the NHS.

The walk will join up with the national Call 999 for the NHS People’s March when both groups arrive at Pinderfields hospital at 3.30pm on the Saturday.

Walk for the NHS organiser Katherine Horner said: “I created the walk because like the 999 Call for the NHS ladies, I am concerned about the future of our NHS.

“I’m worried about the cuts our local hospitals Trust wants to make. Would I be happy sat in an ambulance with one of the kids going all the way from Halifax to Huddersfield if they close Calderdale A&E?

“Also on a national level, do I believe we should have a two tier health care system - one for the haves and one for the have nots? I don’t!!! But this is the way things are going, unless we do something about it.

“Do I believe my children are entitled to a health system which will not be dependent on how much money they have? I do.

So, parent to parent, look at your kids and think about what NHS you want for them.”

The walk starts on Friday, August 22, at Calderdale Royal Hospital, Dryclough Lane at 9am. It reaches The Pavillion in West Vale around 10am and Huddersfield Royal Infirmary at around 12 noon before moving down Westbourne Road for a rally in St George’s Square with speeches from health worker Paul Cooney, a member of Huddersfield Keep Our NHS Public.

The walk sets off at 1.30pm, passes through Robberttown around 5pm and arrives at Dewsbury District Hospital about 6pm.

On the Saturday, walkers will leave Dewsbury at 9am for a walk to Pinderfields Hospital.
