A bike ride in memory of a teenager who collapsed and died while playing football gets underway today.

Huw, 15, from Holmfirth collapsed and died while playing football for Hepworth United in March 2011. Huw had suffered a brain haemorrhage from a pre-existing condition no-one could have known about.

His friends and families set up the Huw Thatcher Trust to raise money for the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust which is part of The Disabilities Trust and the total so far is £95,000. The charity’s aim is to provide the best quality neurobehavioural rehabilitation for people with complex and challenging needs after brain injury.

This year Huw would have been 19 so to mark it his father, Nick, his brother Rob and Rob’s son, 21-year-old Michael, are cycling to each of the 19 football grounds where Nick had taken Huw to see his beloved Cardiff City play away games before finishing at Upperthong Cricket Club at around 4.30pm on Sunday, July 27.

Simply called 19 For Huw, the total miles will be 1,000 which means they’ll be averaging around 110 miles a day and others have already pledged their support.

Nick, who was born and brought up in Cardiff and took Huw to his first Cardiff game when he was five, said: “People will be joining us to cycle part of the way and on the last day when we ride back home from Sheffield Wednesday there will be about 30 cycling with us to Upperthong Cricket Club.

He added: “Huw’s sister, Carys, and I still love to go and see Cardiff City - it is a familiar experience and gives us a special sense of connection with Huw.”

Anyone who wants to support the cyclists can go to a special Just Giving page at http://www.justgiving.com/Nicholas-Thatcher1 Alternatively text HUWT95 then a space and the amount to 70070 e.g. HUWT95 £5.
