ONE man has died and two women were badly hurt in a grim weekend on Calderdale's roads.

A 25-year-old motorcyclist died in an accident in Brighouse and a 23-year woman who was his pillion passenger was seriously injured.

In a separate accident a 23-year-old Brighouse woman was critically-injured when her car crashed in Halifax.

The motorcyclist was named by police today as Stephen Barry Evan Taylor, of Eward Street, Brighouse.

His passenger, who has not been named, was said to be in a comfortable condition at Calderdale Royal Hospital in Halifax.

Police have today appealed for witnesses to both accidents.

The bike crash happened on Huddersfield Road at its junction with Lyndhurst Grove at 6.20pm yesterday .

Mr Taylor died at the scene.

The R-registered Suzuki bike was in collision with a Renault Megane.

The car driver, a Brighouse man, was slightly hurt and allowed home after hospital treatment.

Both vehicles were badly damaged and the road was closed for several hours while police accident investigators worked at the scene.

The second serious accident happened in Halifax at 8pm on Saturday night.

A 23-year-old Brighouse woman suffered severe injuries and was taken to Calderdale Royal Hospital after her green VW Golf car crashed into a wall at the junction of Bird Cage Lane and Kensington Road in Savile Park.

She was later transferred to Leeds General Infirmary where she was said to be critically-ill today.

She was alone in the car and no other vehicles were involved.

A police spokeswoman said: "We are appealing for witnesses to both accidents.

"We need to hear from anyone who saw what happened or may have seen the vehicles involved in the minutes before the tragedies."
