A Birkby man who attacked his girlfriend shortly after being released from prison has been handed more jail time.

Darren McGuin, of Norwood Road, pleaded guilty to charges of assault and damaging property.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard that on May 3 he had met his girlfriend Gemma Gill at The Vulcan pub in St Peter’s Street in Huddersfield town centre.

There was an argument when she demanded to see his phone to check for text messages from other girls.

The court was told that McGuin, 35, then wanted to look at her phone and there was an argument when she failed to hand it over.

The row started near to a taxi office on Lord Street and McGuin took Ms Gill away from there, grabbing hold of her before biting her arm.

A month earlier, on April 11, he threw and broke her mobile phone during an argument.

McGuin had in March been released from prison on licence after serving a three year sentence for burglary.

District Judge Michael Fanning sentenced him to 84 days in jail for the new offences.
