Birkby St John’s Church members were left dancing on air after their event raised £500 to fund vital building repairs.

Over 70 people packed into St Patrick’s Centre in Trinity Street on Saturday evening to take part in a special sequence dance.

Everyone from exhibition dancers to partygoers joined in the fun which went on late into the night.

Organised by the church’s committee members and church warden Tony Clarke, it was the latest fundraising effort to help a mammoth six year project to replace the roof and refurbish the interior of the building, which they think will cost several thousand pounds to complete.

Tony said: “We just want to do as much as we can to keep the repair work moving forward.

“We’re already in the process of having one half of the roof replaced and hope that the next stage will be started next year.

“It’s going to be a long job so we’re continuously having to think of new ideas for events we can hold which can be enjoyed by the community.”

The next fundraising event, a bonfire supper, will be held at the church on November 1 at 6pm.
