A MAN who lost a close friend to cancer has celebrated his 40th birthday by raising cash for other sufferers.

Andrew Wilkinson, of Birkby, organised a big birthday bash to raise £757 for Kirkwood Hospice after his best friend, Anne Mansell, died of the disease in April.

More than 100 friends and family took part in the evening at Bar 1:22 on New Street, Huddersfield.

Musical acts – including Becky Taylor on the Irish pipes and band Transpangaean – provided the entertainment.

People bought tickets and were asked to give cash instead of buying birthday presents.

Andrew said: “I don’t know anyone who hasn’t been affected by cancer.

“I wanted to do something different for my birthday and then when my best friend died, I thought I would do something for a great charity instead.

“It was a good evening and I hope to organise another one soon.”
