Two people were killed in a black night on Huddersfield roads.

The men lost their lives in separate road accidents in the space of eight hours at the weekend.

The first fatality occurred when a 36-year-old man was hit by a car as he walked in the road near Flockton on Saturday evening.

A few hours later, a 22-year-old man was killed after his car rolled and crashed into a lamp-post at Wakefield Road at Aspley.

Police were called to the Flockton incident at 8.25pm on Saturday.

They said the man, who has not been identified, was struck by a Vauxhall Corsa car as it drove south on the A637 Barnsley Road into the village.

The injured pedestrian was taken to hospital but died from his injuries.

Sgt Andy Muskett, of West Yorkshire Police Roads Unit, said a 20-year-old woman from South Yorkshire, who was driving the Corsa, had not been arrested but inquiries are ongoing.

It is thought the victim was walking in the road wearing dark clothing when he was hit.

Less than eight hours later, at Aspley, a motorist was killed after he lost control of his Renault Clio car shortly after coming off the Shorehead roundabout going out of town.

The car rolled, hitting ‘street furniture’ and taking out a lamp-post in the process, at 4.20am yesterday.

No other vehicles were involved in the collision.

Firefighters from Huddersfield came across the wreckage as they were travelling back from another incident in Dalton.

Members of the crew stopped to help the two victims and gave first-aid.

The driver, a 22-year-old local man, was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary but was tragically declared dead shortly afterwards.

The front seat passenger, a man in his 20s, was also taken to hospital but is understood to have only minor injuries.

Police closed the road for more than four hours to complete an accident investigation.

The stretch of Wakefield Road from Firth Street to Shorehead roundabout remained closed until 9.30am yesterday.

Police marker cones could be seen tracing a route across the central reservation of the road.

Witnesses said the badly-damaged car was removed on the back of a truck.

Police are appealing for witnesses to both incidents.
