FIREFIGHTERS battled a blaze at a derelict mill that has been earmarked for redevelopment.

Crews from Huddersfield Fire Station were called to the imposing three-storey Parkwood Mills in Grove Street, Longwood, at 1.55pm on Saturday.

Smoke had been spotted coming from the second floor by a passer-by who immediately alerted the emergency services.

Two firefighters wearing breathing gear entered the building and found an old office was on fire.

Police are investigating.

Crew manager Dave Chadwick said: "It could have been much worse if the fire had not been seen. If it had taken hold we could have been faced with a very large fire spreading across a big mill complex."
