A FIRE which badly damaged a building in Lockwood may be arson.

Fire investigation experts and the police are both investigating the blaze at clothing and fabric firm K Ashish Collection on Victoria Road.

Crew commander Alan Haque from Huddersfield Fire Station said: "It looks like the property was being renovated inside. There was not a lot in there – mainly tables and crockery – but a new roof had been put on part of the building and that was destroyed by the fire.’’

The first crews arrived at 7.30pm on Monday and immediately called for back-up.

Other engines were sent from Slaithwaite and Meltham along with the aerial ladder from Huddersfield.

Victoria Road was closed while firefighters battled to bring the fire under control.

They were at the scene for about five hours.
