It’s ready, steady, go for a group of visually-impaired people who have launched Huddersfield’s first blind tandem cycling club.

The Tandem Trekkers hope to put pedal to the metal to raise awareness of their new group, which they launched to get those with sight problems wheely fit.

Members of the Kirklees Visual Impairment Network have invited people of all cycling abilities to saddle up and have a go.

Sessions are held at Newsome High School and Sports College.

Those with sight problems hop on the back of one of the five new tandem bikes and follow a series of specially-created routes, steered by volunteers.

Riders get the chance to experience the thrill of cycling – and benefit from the exercise.

The group now wants more volunteers and donations of equipment.

Network vice-chairman Martin Eatherley, who helps to run the organisation’s accessible technology drop-in on Upperhead Row, Huddersfield, hopes many visually-impaired people will join.

He said: “With the Tour de France coming to Yorkshire, we thought this would be a good opportunity to get our own club off the ground.

“We hope it will help tackle isolation amongst people with sight loss and encourage them to get outside doing something active and help transform their lives.

“Although there is a group for the disabled in Cleckheaton we aren’t aware of anything else like this in Kirklees for those with eye conditions.

“Anyone over 5ft 10in will be tall enough to steer the bikes and we’d love help from cyclists on designing new and safe routes around the area.”

The group meets every other Saturday from noon to 2pm. The next session is May 17.

Anyone who would like to volunteer, make a donation or find out more should call Martin on 07974 603699.
