Police closed lanes on the M62 tonight after a BMW 4x4 smashed into the central reservation near Outlane.

Officers were called to the eastbound carriageway between junctions 22 and 23 to find the white BMW X6 ‘impaled’ on the metal barrier. No other vehicle is thought to have been involved.

A police spokesman said it was thought no one was hurt.

Police and the Highways Agency attended the scene just after 4.30pm and both carriageways were affected and there were long tailbacks and delays.

The BMW X6 spun round and was left stricken on the barrier facing the wrong way down the motorway.

The BMW X6 which was involved in an accident on the M62 westbound carriageway near the Round Ings Road, road bridge at Outlane.

Two lanes were closed while investigations, recovery and repair work got underway.

The outside lane of the westbound carriageway also had to be closed for safety reasons, causing delays on the opposite side.

It was thought the road would be shut for several hours.
